Edgar Degas
1834 - 1917

Edgar Degas was a member of the Impressionist painters. But unlike the other Impressionists, who painted the outdoors, he preferred the indoor scenes of ballet dancers and seamstresses. He made careful studies and several detailed sketches for each painting, which differentiated him from the other Impressionists who painted quick "impressions" of scenes. Degas is famous for his ability to paint the graceful beauty of ballet dancers.

"Ballet Dancers in the Wings"

"The Rehearsal on the Stage"

Degas offended many painters when he told them they didn't know how to paint. He had the rare ability to capture a scene in his mind and reproduce it on his canvas back at the studio. Later in life he changed his style. He began thinning out his paints, giving them colorful vibrations. He then went to painting over pastels and then to strictly pastels, steaming them until they became as soft and workable as oil on the brush.
