Paul Gauguin
1848 - 1903

Paul Gauguin often called the "civilized savage," was born in Paris and raised in Peru. He returned to France and became a stockbroker and a banker until he began travelling back and forth to the Tahitian islands. He eventually settled there and lived with the natives. He first painted only as a hobby. After becoming acquainted with the impressionists, he gave up a high-paying job to paint fulltime. He is most famous for his paintings of the South Sea Islands.

"Tahitian Women"

Gauguin often painted his paintings with solid colors. As a result, the objects and figures in his paintings appear very flat. Besides being flat, the people in his paintings are slightly distorted. They almost appear as squarish statues. His style is also characterized by a bold outline around all the objects and figures. Also, each figure is usually represented in resting or relaxing positions.
