Winslow Homer
1836 - 1910

Winslow Homer is considered by many to be America's greatest water-colorist. Self-trained, and gifted with keen powers of observation, he loved the outdoors and strove to capture the effects of light on the colors of nature. He became an excellent draughtsman and professional illustrator, but is best known for his American coastal landscapes and his seascapes.

"The Gulf Stream"

"Canoe in the Rapids"

The most notable characteristic of Homer's style is his ability to convey weather conditions and the physical feeling of particular landscapes on canvas without losing the solidity of nature's substance. The viewer can almost feel the freshness of the air in the forest, the spaces in the trees, and the shafts of light filtering to the ground. He clearly understood the mastery of color, for example that bright sunlight blurrs objects and reduces the amount of visible detail. He also understood that shadows are not different from their actual color, but simply darker values.
