Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
1864 - 1901

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a French painter and graphic artist of the late 19th century, brought the art of the poster to a high degree of development. Using simple, bright compositions, he captured the essential traits of the subject matter, which was usual dancers, cabaret performers, and other social scenes. He was not a follower of any special school of painting, nor did he have pupils or followers.

"A La Mie"

"At the Moulin Rouge"

At the beginning of his career, Lautrec tried the technique of the Impressionists, the popular style of the day. But he did not share their fondness for nature and the outdoors. Lautrec painted the common person. He enjoyed being with them, sharing in their activities, and studying them. Lautrec's paintings resemble his prints in their bright color and simplicity. Lautrec's lines express emotion and show his love of people.
