Henri Matisse
1869 - 1954

Henri Matisse, a French painter, played a vital part in gaining a new freedom for 20th century art and, particularly, the use of color. He participated in and became the leader of the Fauve movement. He loved experimenting with color and used it as a medium for expressing joy and beauty.

"Self-Portrait"

"Harmony in Red"

Matisse's work is distinguished by its bright luminous colors. He learned to love color and became very skilled at combining them into patterns and areas of decoration. Frequently he layered several different highly colored patterned materials, such as striped material against a background of flowered wallpaper. The favorite subject in Matisse's works were women, flowers, and fruit. His forms often seem distorted because detail is omitted, but actually they are intended to express the essence of a body, a fruit, etc., rather than its exact outline.
