Michelangelo Buonarroti
1475 - 1564

Michelangelo Buonarotti lived during the height of the Renaissance. He was considered a genius even during his lifetime, and was constantly urged to accept commissions. He was a gifted painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and poet. His preference was sculpture and his figures are noted for their striking power and dramatic expressiveness.

"The Pieta (marble sculpture)"

"The Holy Family"

With his preference to sculpture, Michelangelo once said, "Nothing was right with me unless I had a chisel in my hand." He styled his sculptures after the works of the ancient Greeks. He, like them, wanted to capture ideal beauty in each figure. Michelangelo's figures are noted today for their striking power and dramatic expressiveness. He had tremendous ability to draw the human form with near perfect accuracy.
