Claude Monet
1840 - 1926

Claude Monet was the leading French painter of the Impressionist movement. Probably more than any other member of the group, he was extremely sensitive to the effects of light on objects and spent his entire life trying to paint on canvas the sensations he experienced in observing this phenomenon in nature.

"The Garden at Sainte-Adresse"

"The Houses of Parliament"

As Monet began to observe nature closely, he saw color was not a flat even mass, as he thought earlier. Instead, it was the result of reflections from neighborhood objects. He started to see shadows, not as gray or black, but as shades of tyhe object's color, plus reflections of the color of the objects that cast the shadow. He painted these forms without an outline, using many short strokes of color to represent the subject. This effect is difficult to see when closely viewed, but is perfectly clear when viewed from a distance.
