Pierre Auguste Renoir
1841 - 1919

Pierre Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France on February 25, 1841. When he was four, his family moved to Paris. As a boy, he drew on the floor with chalk from his father's tailor shop. To stop the disappearance of his chalk, his father gave his son pencils and paper. Thus began the career of one of the world's most famous painters.

"A Box at the Theater"

"Le Moulin de la Galette"

Renoir's style was similar to that of the other Impressionists, although each was unique. Of the four original members who were close friends, Renoir had the greatest technical skill and a more instinctive love of painting. Many have closely compared his style to that of Claude Monet. Their contributions are similar and their paintings are hard to distinguish. However where Monet preferred to emphasize the landscapes in his paintings and eventually left people completely out, Renoir emphasized people and eventually only used landscapes as backgrounds for the people. Renoir said, "Since paintings are to decorate walls; they therefore should be pleasant, joyous, and beautiful; because there are enough boring things."
