Henri Rousseau
1844 - 1910

Henri Rousseau, a self-taught French painter, didn't seriously start painting until he retired from his customs post, at the age of 40. He is called a primitive painter because of the direct, child-like quality of his work. He is most remembered for his dream-like jungle scenes.

"Surprise"

Rousseau's first one man exhibition of his work was held two months after his death. At the time of his death, he was still not recognized for any particular talent, except by a small circle of artist friends. Today, many recognize and appreciate his amazing technique, his exquisite sense of color, and his great knowledge of pattern and design. Rousseau's works are noted for his ability to organize space and to paint complex tones. An artist once counted over fifty variations of green alone in one painting.
