"More than anything else, twelve-year-old Miguel wanted to go with the sheep to the mountains. He had been told that the Sangre de Cristo Mountains were full of beautiful and exciting things.

Miguel was anxious to demonstrate that he was no longer a child and could handle adult responsibilities. o Miguel, the recognition that he was grown up was to help take the sheep to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains for the summer. To show his competence, he located some lost sheep and worked hard keeping the floor of the shed clean during the shearing of the sheep."

While helping to pack fleece into burlap bags, Miguel was accidently swallowed up by one of the bags, and as a result, incurred the anger of his father. His hope to go to the mountains seemed lost. With the unexpected induction of his older brother, Gabriel, into the army, Miguel was asked to go to the mountains.
