Caddie Woodlawn
Brink, Carol Ryrie
Newbery Award
Main character: Caddie Woodlawn, her family and friends
Setting: Wisconsin at the time of the Civil War
Readability: 8

"This is the story of Caddie Woodlawn and her family in Wisconsin at the time of the Civil War. Caddie was a tomboy who spent her time adventuring with her brothers. When the Woodlawns are faced with the choice of staying in Wisconsin or going to England to claim Mr. Woodlawn's unexpected inheritance, each member of the family was given an equal vote. Read Caddie Woodlawn to learn the outcome."

This is an account of the stories told to Mrs. Brink by her grandmother, who was 82 years old at the time the book was published. Although the readability is 8th grade (mainly because of sentence length), the book would probably have more appeal to younger students.
