Main Characters: Daniel Boone, John Finley, Rebecca

"The black buzzards were sailing in slow circles overhead; and as the men forded the river, the great birds rose heavily from their feast. The soldiers buried what the wolves had left, but it was a ghastly task on that hot August afternoon."

Daniel Boone was raised to be a farmer, but farming didn't suit a curious, adventuresome young man. His life became anything but dull. He accompanied General Braddock's ill-fated expedition to drive the French from British territory. John Finley, whom Daniel had met during the Braddock expedition, told Daniel about the lands west of the Appalachian Mountains (Kentucky). His stories of the area inspired Daniel to make the journey there.

For many years, Daniel trapped, hunted, and explored the land. Eventually he brought his family and others to the wilderness and established Boonesborough. In later years, his land was taken from him; and, as a result, he turned westward again and settled in Missouri where he remained the rest of his life.
