Ginger Pye
Estes, Eleanor
Newbery Award Winner
Readability: 7-8
Main Characters: Jerry Pye, age 10, Gracie Pye, age 9, and their pup Ginger.
Setting: Cranbury, located between Boston and New York.

"One reason that Jerry and Gracie knocked at doors asking if they had seen Ginger Pye was that they hoped to catch a glimpse of the old yellow hat hanging on a peg in a hallway. This was the only clue they had to the disappearance of Ginger Pye, and they could not be positive that the person in the yellow hat had anything to do with the person who had stolen Ginger Pye."

This story should especially appeal to the child who loves dogs. Ginger Pye is Jerry's pet. He teaches him many kinds of tricks and showers a great deal of love on the young dog. However, there had been one other person who desired the dog when Jerry bought him for a dollar.

The dog is stolen, and a great search is undertaken. Finally, after months, the dog is found by Bennie, their very young uncle.
