Readability: 6
Newbery Award
Main Characters: Taran and Eilonwy
Setting: The legendary land of Pyrdain

"The wolves had done their work well. The outlaws, large in numbers, lay slain on the forest floor. Eilonwy had retrieved her bauble through the wolves' help. As she cupped it in her hands, the golden rays shed light on a huge wolf."

This is a story which grew from Welh legend. It is an attempt to make a land of fantasy have some impact upon the world of reality. Great battles were fought with good, the forces of Taran, nearly being defeated by evil, the forces of Lord Annuvin, The Death Lord. Large masses of men and animals for good were mustered to overcome these evils and sustain Taran as High King in Prydain and Eilonwy as the new Queen. But now only the bards know the truth of these tales, for time has changed man and all the promised tasks have been accomplished.
