Setting: New York City
Age of Main Character: 14
"O.K.," Nick snaps. "Goo' bye, Bashful."
"Dave lets him have it right in the mouth. Nick punches him back in the stomach and trips Dave so that they both fall to the ground. The fighting goes from bad to worse. Nick grabs Dave's hair and bangs his head on the sidewalk. Dave twists and bites Nick's hand. They gouge, scratch, bite, and kick because they are both so mad they can hardly see."
This is a story of a fourteen-year-old boy in New York City. In his relationship with Aunt Kate (who is really not his aunt), he gets a cat which he names Cat. Cat teaches him many things such as compromise, loyalty, and courage. Because Cat is such a venturesome fellow, Dave makes an acquaintance that greatly influences him for the rest of his life. Tom brings to Dave's life a greater understanding and appreciation for his family and the advantages that he has. He realizes the good qualities and the problems his mother and father have. He learns how to cope with situations.
As Dave says, "My father is always talking about how a dog can be very educational for a
boy. This is one reason I got Cat."
