Julie of the Wolves
George, Jean Craighead
Readability: 6-7
Main Character: Miyax, 13 year-old Eskimo girl
Setting: Alaska
Newbery Award

"Whether Miyax, an Eskimo girl, lived or died depended upon a regal, black wolf and the wolf pack he led. She was lost on the frozen, featureless tundra. She had to make friends with the wolves to survive."

Miyax, a motherless Eskimo girl, was the constant companion of her hunter father, Kapugen, until her aunt brought an injunction saying she must go to school. There she became Americanized, learning to speak English, to drink Cokes, and to long for all the "gussak" ways. When she runs away to try to reach Amy, her San Francisco pen pal, she becomes lost on the tundra. It is only her knowledge of the old ways that saves her.
