The fight came on all of a sudden. There was a rush of feet, a roar, and Alan thrust a sword into the mate's body.

David glanced up at the window to see five more men rushing toward him. With rifle in hand and shaking so badly it was nearly impossible for hlm to take aim, Davld pulled the trigger.

David fired three times, and the men fled. On the way out, one of the men grabbed Mr. Shuan, who had blood pouring from his mouth, and dragged him out the door.

David and Alan counted the dead or wounded. Only four or five. Alan replied, "To your watch, David. There's not enough blood let; they'll be back again. "

After David Balfour's father died, he was sent on his way to live with Ebenezer Shaw, an uncle he had never known. David entered this situation with the qualities of honesty, courage, endurance, youth, and the capacity for friendship. Being greeted by his uncle was a cold, bloodthirsty experience. Ebenezer tried flrst to kill David and when that failed, he sold David to Hoseason, and put hlm on the ship, The Covenant, sailing to the Carolinas, to be sold into slavery.

There were several bloodcurdling experiences aboard ship. Then David met Alan Breck, a daredevil. He was shipwrecked with David near the Island of Mull. David and Alan were companions throughout the rest of the story. Together they had many adventures such as being pursued by the law and outlaws, becoming ill, starving, and facing unheard of obstacles.

With the help of Alan and the lawyer, Mr. Rankeillor, David outwitted his uncle and inherlted two thirds of e Shaw estate. Alan was sent to sea and all turns out well.
