True Son marched along the road wlth sadness in hls heart. He was returning to hls "real" white famlly. He wanted to fight back and free hlmself, but he remembered hls father's words, "It is better to walt for your cause to be ripe, like a persimmon on the snow, before you fight back. " True Son promlsed himself that he would bear his disgrace like an Indian and would wait to strike.

John C. Butler had been captured by the Lenni Lenape Indians at age four and was adopted by the chief. John became "True Son" and learned all the Indian ways and loved his life in the wilderness.

After eleven years of being ralsed by his Indlan parents, True Son was forced to return to his white parents. True Son returned to the Butler's white mansion but swore to return to his Indian family.

With the help of Half Arrow, his Indian cousin, True Son returned to his tribe. The happiness was short-llved, and True Son found himself forsaking his tribe for his white family. The surprise ending allows the reader to see the inner conflict of a boy who must choose between the civilized society and the freedom of Indian life.
