"The searing pain of a hog's tusk made Travis scream and stumble. The boy would have been killed had it not been for Old Yeller who pulled Travis away. Travis managed to stand and run until he was out of danger. As he sat picking the prickly-pear spines out of his hip, he saw Old Yeller's blood-stained body ripped wide open. The sight of Old Yeller made Travis' flesh crawl. Travis wanted to run off and leave him to die, but how could he? Maybe his mama could help. Old Yeller just couldn't die. Travis ran limping home to get his mama while Yeller's howl followed him."

Old Yeller came to live with Travis and his family in the wilderness. He was a big, yellow, meat-stealing dog which the family came to love and never forget.

The father was gone and Travis had to assume the head of the house for his mother and little Arliss,
