"When Mrs. Frisby tried to find a way to save her sick son, Timothy, she received help from a strange group of friends: the silver-white mouse, Mr. Ages, and the owl, who usually didn't help field mice. The owl sent Mrs. Frisby to see the rats of Nimh. Mrs. Frisby found a remarkable community, and she wondered what special magic the rats of Nimh possessed."

Mrs. Frisby, a field mouse, learns about the rats of Nimh. Originally, they had been city rats who were captured and taken to a laboratory as experirnental subjects. There they received injections and training. The rats of Nimh became remarkably intelligent. The doctor felt that they had changed their DNA. They learned to read, found out how to open their cages, and escaped the lab. Once away, they established a model community in Mr. Fitzgibbon's garden.
