Hunt, Irene
Newbery Award Winner
Readability: 7
Main Character: Julie, age 7 to 18
Setting: A large farm
"I was not going to risk losing Brett just because I enjoyed Shakespeare and he didn't.
Brett was tall, wide of shoulder, narrow of hip, beautifully bronzed, blue-eyed with heavy
lashes, black haired, and square chinned. Almost all the girls in the school had been dazzled
when he entered our school as a transfer student. To my surprise and joy, he chose me,
Julie Trelling, as his girl."
Up a Road Slowly is the story of a young girl's life between the age of 7 and 18. At age
seven Julie had to face the death of her mother. As a twelve-year old she had to face the
death of Aggie, whom she had mistreated because she smelled so badly, plus the remarriage
of her father to Alicia.
Because she feels strange and lonely she continues to live with her Aunt Cordelia
instead of her stepmother and father. She falls in and out of love with Brett after she
discovers he is interested only in her ability to help him with his school work. She falls
in love with Danny, an old-time friend of the family, and after finishing college plans to
marry him. She also plans to have a writing career which Uncle Haskell had helped her to
begin before he died.
