Chile
Chile is a narrow strip of land in South America. It lies between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The Andes are on the east side of Chile; and they are a wall of ice, snow, and rock. The Pacific Ocean is on the west side of Chile. Chile is about twenty-four times as long as it is wide. About ten million people live there.
The climate in Chile separates the land regions. The north is a dry area, the south is cool, and in the long fertile central valley the climate is mild.
The northern deserts contain the great nitrate beds. These regions are also rich in copper, iron, silver, and other ores. The country's chief cities are found in the fertile central valley. This section has large grain fields and ranches. Four fifths of the people of Chile live here. Southern Chile is used mostly for raising sheep.
