Communication
Man has always communicated in some form. It may have been in sign language, oral language, or written language.
In early history, man used sign language. He later found that he could not communicate like he wanted to with sign language, so he began some sort of spoken language. Only after man began oral communication was he able to begin trying to record messages, ideas, and experiences.
Many messengers of long ago carried sticks with them. The sender of the message would notch the stick. Each notch stood for a part of the message. It was to serve as a reminder for the carrier. Other men used various kinds of reminders. They devised knotted strings to help keep records of births, deaths, and battles. Strings, sticks, and colors were sometimes used together to mean different things.
