Diamonds
Diamonds are among the most precious stones. The glittering gems are evidence of lasting wealth. They cannot be destroyed, be changed, or become worthless.
Diamonds are also important in factories and machine shops. We use three fourths of the diamonds in this way because they are the hardest, longest-wearing substances known to man.
A diamond can only be cut by another diamond. If a diamond is placed at the end of a cutting tool, it can cut through the hardest steel. Diamonds can be used to sharpen grinding wheels. Diamonds are used in many ways to turn the wheels of modern machinery.
Annually, about 4 1/2 tons of diamonds are mined. South Africa produces most of the diamonds, but recently Brazil has also produced many of our diamonds.
