Gunpowder
Gunpowder is one of the oldest inventions. It brought about great changes in history.
The inventor of gunpowder is not really known. Many believe that the Chinese used gunpowder first. In the year 1242, an Englishman, Roger Bacon, published directions to make gunpowder. His directions included saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal. Today these same materials are still used to make gunpowder.
Knighthood was ended with the invention of gunpowder. The period of history known as the "age of chivalry" was a time of fighting knights. They were equipped with lances, horses, and heavy armor. After gunpowder was invented, muskets were found to be more effective in battle.
