Gypsies
Gypsies are a group of people with a history that dates back many hundreds of years. This history is uncertain because it never was recorded. Romany, their language, originated in the country of India. Many believe that this was the first home of the Gypsies.
Gypsy people are known as wanderers. Large bands traveled through Asia before they finally migrated to Europe in the fifteenth century. Before long, Gypsies could be found living in all parts of the world. Today, there are about 75,000 Gypsies living in North America.
Gypsies never stay in any one place long. They roam from place to place. Most of them keep to themselves, refusing to settle in any country.
Gypsies are fine musicians. Many of them live as itinerant workers. They are also known for their fine metal work. Others work as horse traders or fortune-tellers.
