Magnesium

Magnesium is one of the most important metals known to man. It is a light, malleable metal. When it is properly combined with other metals, it is very durable and strong. This is what makes magnesium so important.

Aluminum, one of our lightest metals, weighs one hundred and seventy-five pounds per cubic foot. Magnesium, however, weighs only one hundred and twelve pounds per cubic foot. Because of this special light property, magnesium is useful in building airplanes.

Magnesium, in powder form, burns nearly as quickly as gasoline and gives off an intense white light. This white light makes magnesium useful for photography and signal flares.

This important metal can be found in the sea as well as on land. It is always found in combination with other substances and has to be separated before it can be used.
