Indian Medicine
The American Indians had several methods for curing illnesses. They quite often used magic, during which times all sorts of ceremonies and dances would be held.
When not using magic, the Indians would turn to such methods as the sweat house. The Indian sweat house was desirable in cases of fever. It was a dirt-covered hut in which a fire was kept burning. A feverish man entered the house and endured the heat for as long as he could. Then he would run and jump into the closest lake or stream. On coming out, his fever would be cured.
The Indians were also skilled in setting broken bones. Plants were also an important part of the Indians' medicine. They used wild elderberry blossoms to make a broth to cure fevers; wild peonies made a medicine for stomachaches; and from lizard's-tails, they made a gargle for sore throats. Many of the medicines that Indians made from plants are still used today.
