Octopus

The octopus is a strange-looking animal. He is large and savage looking.

The octopus appears unpleasant because he has eight snakelike arms, or tentacles, that are fastened together by a web surrounding its mouth. These tentacles are very powerful. The octopus uses them to capture his prey. He just scoops the victims into his mouth. He eats many sea animals, but he prefers a diet of crabs and lobsters.

The octopus discharges a black liquid from a funnel located below his head when he is in danger. This hides him from the view of his enemy because it clouds the water around him.

Octopuses come in many sizes. Some measure twenty feet from the tip of one arm to the tip of the opposite arm. Others are very small. They can be the size of a postage stamp.

Octopuses are not really fish at all. They belong to the family of mollusks. These include snails, oysters, and clams.
