Parachute

As airplane travel grew more popular, it became clear that a device was needed to safely evacuate passengers in an emergency. After several attempts a device called a parachute was invented. It permitted people to descend safely through the air from an airplane.

A Frenchman named Lenormand made the first recorded jump. He did not actually use a parachute, but he used a parachutelike device. In both hands he held a separate umbrella and jumped from a tower. He landed unhurt on the ground. Through the years many experiments were tried. Finally, the modern parachute was produced.

Modern parachutes weigh about seventeen pounds. They measure anywhere from twenty-four to twenty-eight feet across. The parachutes are usually made of silk, nylon, or rayon. Parachutes are strapped to the back. The parachute can be opened easily by pulling the release cord. Today, many of the parachutes open and spread automatically.
