Quinine

A long time ago a drug to treat several diseases was discovered accidentally. An old Peruvian Indian ate some bark of a Cinchona tree, and it cured his terrible fever. This drug that could be extracted from the bark of this tree was known as Quinine.

Since 1816 quinine has proved to be very valuable to modern medicine. It has helped in the treatment of malaria. This disease is transmitted by the anopheles mosquito and is common in the tropical regions of the world. Quinine preparations are also useful in treating other diseases, such a typhoid fever and rheumatic fever.

The cinchona trees are native to South America. Today, however, they can be found growing in Java, India, and Ceylon. These trees belong to the evergreen family and have very fragrant flowers. The bark of the Cinchona tree is stripped and dried. Later it is ground into powder, and this is what quinine is made from.
