Measuring Time
The seven day week is a very convenient measurement. It is necessary to have a measure longer than a day but shorter than a month. A week is a measure of time that does not depend on the movement of the
earth.
No one is certain of how the seven day week began. The Romans had an eight day week while the ancient Babylonians had no week at all.
The names of the days of the week were derived from the names of gods who were worshipped by the ancients. They believed that each god had control of the earth for that day. The god of the sun was believed to be in charge of the earth on Sunday, while the moon was in control on Monday. Tuesday is named for the god Tyr, who is the Norse god of war. Wednesday is named for the chief Teutonic god Wooten; and Thursday is the day of Thor, the Norse god of thunder. The Norse goddess of love Frigg rules the earth on Friday. Saturday is named for the Roman god Saturn.
