Have you ever thought of where we get rope? It is a common article to many of us and is probably one of the most useful devices ever invented by man.
Rope making was one of the earliest industries.
Long ago people made rope by hand. They took fibers from the bark of certain plants, and from animal hides they cut strips of skin. These two things were then twisted together to make rope.
Today we make rope from several kinds of hemp.
One kind is sisal hemp. The sisal plants grow mainly in Florida and Mexico. Manila hemp is another especially good fiber for making rope. Besides being grown in America, hemp is also grown in Europe and is a native of Asia.
Rope is now made in factories and we can get almost any type we want. The first factory, for rope making was built in 1820.
