Antibiotics - Wonder Drugs
Long ago people only lived to be about twenty-six years old. Today they live three times that long or longer because of the drugs called wonder drugs. Some of these include antibiotics and sulfa drugs.
Sulfa drugs keep germs from multiplying. Sulfa drugs come from chemicals. They seem to work very well. At first, dangerous side effects appeared. Then, a new less dangerous sulfa drug was developed.
The best known antibiotic is penicillin. Antibiotic drugs come from living organisms such as mold. Anti- biotics keep germs from growing.
Several medical questions are still unanswered. For instance, although we have the wonder drugs, there is still no drug that can prevent the common cold. Also, new drugs need to be developed all the time, because our bodies build up a resistance to drugs after a period of use.
