Hibernation

Some animals sleep during the winter. They sleep so soundly that they look dead. They almost stop breathing and their hearts beat very faintly. They become cold, too, and yet they are really alive and waiting for spring to come. Bats sleep all winter long. If in the middle of summer we were to take a bat and plunge it into water it would soon drown. But when a bat has fallen into its winter sleep, we could place it in a bucket of water and keep it there for nearly half an hour, and it would be none the worse for the drenching.
