Indian Rubber

Some Indians of South America have an interesting way of preparing rubber for market. They cut opening in the bark of the rubber trees and then fasten cups under the holes so the sap will flow into the cups. Each say the Indians gather this sap and carry it to their huts. They build a fire of palm nuts. Next they dip a long stick into the sap and hold it over the smoke of the fire until the sap hardens. They repeat this process again and again until balls of rubber have fromed on the sticks. Boats go up and down the rivers collecting these balls from the Indians and is at last made into many useful things.
