The Visitors

Mr. Wood lived on a farm in New England. At one corner of his farm there was a large swamp in which grew many willow trees. One summer day an Indian man and woman came to the kitchen door. They asked if they might camp by the swamp and get some of the willow branches. Mr. Wood gave them permission so they put up a tent and went to work. They cut the branches and pounded them until they would split into strips when they were bent. Then, they wove baskets out of these strips which they had colored by using roots and bark. When winter came the snow nearly covered their tent. Mr. Wood told them that they might stay in his barn. In the spring they started off to sell the baskets which they had made. Before they left the farm they gave Mr. Wood several baskets in return for his kindness.
