Schools of Long Ago

Have you ever wondered what our schools were like in the days of long ago? Many of these schools were held in the home of one of the women of the village. The children all gathered in one room, which was usually the kitchen. The teacher kept the naughty ones from straying by tying them to her chair. Later, one-room schoolhouses were built. At one end of the room was a wide fireplace. The windows were made of oiled paper instead of glass. There were long benches made of logs, split in two, running across the room. It was not until 150 years ago that schoolhouses with a second floor were built. Now some of the finest buildings in the United States are school buildings.
