Thoughts of rain forests usually bring images of tropical plants and animals in South America. However, North America also has a rain forest. Explore this important habitat.

Go to a site called "The Rainforest Workshop" at

Select the Temperate Rainforest segment and answer these questions:


  • Where is the temperate rain forest in Washington State?

  • Name some types of plants in the temperate rain forest.

  • How much of the rain forest has been lost and why?

Proceed to another part of the Missouri Botanical Garden's site featuring a field report of students who visited the ancient temperate rain forests at
http://cissus.mobot.org/MBGnet/fr/temprain/index.htm.

Follow the arrows to explore the students' field report. Evaluate the types of information and photographs provided by the students. Is this a valuable report? Why or why not?

Extension Activity

You can write a letter to your member of Congress to urge conservation of the ancient rain forests. Go to
