Plant Stems
Name:

Plants stems are the systems that the plant uses to transport nutrients and water from the roots to the leaves. The leaves of the plant, through photosynthesis, make food that is carried to the various parts of the plant by smaller stems. In a dicotyledon plant the tiny tubes are arranged in rings. If you have ever seen a cross section of a tree you will remember the rings that were present. As the tree grows new rings are added. In a moncotyledon plant like a rose, the tubes are scattered in random fashion throughout the stem and remain that way even when the plant gets older.
