"I, for one, hope for the day when women will know no restrictions because of gender but will be individuals free to live their lives as men are free."
Amelia Earhart, the daughter of a railroad attorney, was the first female American aviator to make a solo flight across the Atlantic. She first took up aviation as a hobby. After she was chosen to be a passenger on the trimotor Friendship, which flew from Newfoundland to Wales, she turned flying into a career. She married American publisher and explorer George Palmer Putnam in 1931 and in 1932 undertook her first solo flight across the Atlantic. In 1935 she added the first solo flight from Honolulu to California to her record. Ms. Earhart vanished during an around-the-world flight attempt in 1937, after she took off from New Guinea for Howland Island in the Pacific. An extensive search failed to locate her and it was assumed that she was lost at sea.
