Andrew Carnegie was an industrialist and philanthropist. Born in Scotland, he came to the U.S. in 1848 and settled in Pennsylvania. After 1873, he started concentrating on steel production and by 1900 his Carnegie Steel Company produced one quarter of all the U.S.output. Carnegie liked spreading his wealth around and his benefactions, totaling $350,000,000 at the time, include Carnegie Hall in New York and more than 2800 libraries. To date the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Carnegie Institute of Technology continue to provide grants to promote education, science and peace.
