Anwar El-Sadat succeeded President Nasser as President of Egypt in 1970. During his tenure, he enjoyed great popularity and prestige within the army. After his Military Academy education, Sadat became closely associated with Nasser and other officers who opposed British control of Egypt. He was a leader in the military coup that overthrew King Faruk in 1952 and brought Nasser to power. In 1973 Sadat successfully struck across the Suez Canal to try to regain the Sinai Peninsula, Egyptian territory lost in the 1967 Six Day War with Israel. In 1977, with the help of President Carter, President Sadat and Prime Minister Menachem Begin negotiated a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt for which the two leaders shared the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize.
