Benito Mussolini was the Fascist dictator of Italy from 1922 to 1943. Known by the nickname "Il Duce" (the leader), the head of the Fascist Party skillfully manipulated the press to gradually build up the legend that "Duce" was always right and could solve all of Italy's political and economic problems. He tried to create an Italian empire by transferring all power to himself and ultimately aligned himself with the Hitler regime during World War II. After Italy was defeated on all fronts in 1943, Mussolini's allies turned against him. "Il Duce" was hung in April 1945.
