William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody was an American frontiersman, who romanticized the cowboy West and set the stage for today's rodeo shows. Though he was an able scout for the U.S. Army in the Indian wars--as a scout, he took part in 16 indian fights, including the Cheyenne fight in 1869--he became much more famous as an actor in his Wild West shows. Ned Buntline was the first author to make Buffalo Bill the hero of his dime novels. In 1872 Buntline persuaded Cody to appear on the stage. Many shows would follow. In 1893, at the Chicago World's Fair, Buffalo Bill's show scored its greatest success ever.
