Charlie Chaplin was born into a family of music hall performers. As a youth he joined the Fred Karno Comedy Act and by age 19 had become its leading performer. When the troupe toured the U.S. in 1913, Mack Sennet saw Chaplin perform and hired him to work for his Keystone studio in Hollywood. Within a year, Chaplin made 35 one-reel comedies. In 1919, he formed United Artist Pictures with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and director D.W. Griffith, so that each could produce and distribute his own filmds independently. Chaplin built his own studio and started producing full-length motion pictures. He became most famous for his "tramp" roles in films such as The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights (1931) and Modern Times (1936).
