"The main object of the New Life Movement is to substitute a rational life for the irrational."
Chiang Kai-Shek, who was born Chiang Chung-Cheng, was head of the Nationalist government in China from 1928 until 1949 when he was overthrown by the Communists. He subsequently became head of the Chinese Nationalist government in exile on the island of Taiwan. One of the reasons cited for Chiang's overthrow by the Communists is that his government was riddled with corruption and that Chiang was unwilling to deal with change. In 1955 Chiang signed an agreement with the U.S., which set Taiwan on the road to modern economic development. Chiang did not live to see the U.S. break its diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1979 in order to establish full relations with the People's Republic of China.
