American lawyer Clarence Seward Darrow was best known for his masterful, if not always successful, defense in political and labor trials such as the Scopes case. Darrow started out as an attorney for the Chicago and North Western Railway, but resigned during the Pullman strike. Amongst others, he defended Robert Pendergast, the convicted assassin of Chicago mayor Carter Harrison and William Haywood, accused of conspiring to kill Frank Steunenberg, the former governor of Idaho.
