Dwight D. Eisenhower pursued a military career and graduated from West Point in 1915. Between 1935 and 1939 he served on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines. He was made commander of allied forces in North Africa in 1942 and served as supreme allied commander in Europe. He was made a 5-star general in 1943. After World War II, he returned to the U.S. and published his war memoirs "Crusade in Europe". Eisenhower resigned from the army to run for Republican president in 1952 and defeated Adlai Stevenson in the election. He defeated Stevenson again in 1956. He liked to refer to himself as moderate, favoring a "free market system." He retired to his farm near Gettysburg, Pa. where he was visited by the next 3 successors to the White House, who liked to call on the elder statesman for counseling.
