Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was the country's most active First Lady in her era. She had an intensively unhappy childhood, which left her feeling inadequate, but after returning to the U.S. from boarding school in England, Eleanor blossomed into an emancipated leader. She married her distant cousin Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1905 and had six children, one of whom died in infancy. During World War I she helped the Red Cross with war work and when her husband became president in 1933, she became a major voice in his administration, fighting for measures for the underprivileged and racial minorities. Eleanor Roosevelt's initiatives had great impact on national policy toward blacks, women, and the poor.
